Based on client goals, we interview ocean experts and review the latest research to create captivating articles on any topic related to the ocean.

Reports

Reports do not need to be dry. To make an impact, your reports need to be visually interesting and story-driven.

The reports we create focus on these three areas:

  1. Compelling and accessible writing:  Overarching narratives, inviting readers in and taking them all the way along to the recommendations or calls to action 

  2. Human voices: Showcasing stories and case studies, quotes and highlighting individual voices

  3. Visual storytelling: We believe stories can be told through imagery and the visual flow of ideas just as much as through words.

We create clear and concise writing to communicate complex and technical ideas, co-developing white papers and research papers with clients. We also tailor materials to clients’ needs, such as creating brochures, articles or web content that align with reports and other products.

We follow up with stakeholders throughout projects, reaching out for their feedback to ensure they and their work are represented well, and communicating about the final project outcomes.

Professional Listening

  • We’ve been listening to stakeholders tell their stories for over ten years, and consider this skill (continually in development) key to our success. We take the stories we hear and communicate them in our writing and visuals, and interviewees often tell us they feel well-represented in our work.

  • We extend our listening work also to our clients. We keep in close contact with clients from the proposal phase to project closeout, to ensure our final products meet their needs.

Expertise in Ocean Science and Writing

  • We have the knowledge and vocabulary to talk with ocean scientists, researchers, policymakers, those from industry and not-for profits; to understand their passions and challenges and ask the right questions; and to create content that resonates with these ocean experts and other audiences, including youth and the public.
  • People connect with stories. Even when the final product is a weighty technical report, we believe that creating a narrative throughout all our products – visually with graphic design and layout and through the writing – as well as telling digestible (bite-sized) stories within a larger document, are required to have an engaging final product that people will remember.

Equity Focus

  • In our work, we focus on empowering women and girls in ocean science, and have more recently expanded that reach to a more global focus on equity (such as supporting the participation and leadership of people from Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries, and Landlocked Developing Countries) and support for Canada’s efforts at Truth and Reconciliation.
  • We do this by including diverse voices in our content, including through stories and case studies, quotes and consideration of who participates in the review process, and ensuring these considerations are included throughout the project process (not as an afterthought).
