Our Services
About Us
Since 2014, CarolAnne Black Consulting Science Writers, based in Ottawa, Canada, has been delivering high-quality ocean stories – reports, news and features, white papers, peer-reviewed papers, a children’s novel and a script – related to a broad set of ocean-related topics including a focus on gender and policy.
We work with Canadian, international and intergovernmental organisations, and have strong knowledge of and connections to the ocean sector – research, industry, policy and not-for-profit – that help us to effectively tell our clients’ ocean stories.
We believe that ocean stories should be compelling so they can reach readers, increase their knowledge and engage them to take action.
What makes us different
Professional Listening
We’ve been listening to ocean experts tell their stories for over ten years. We take the stories we hear and communicate them in our writing and visuals, and interviewees often tell us they feel well-represented in our work.
Expertise in Ocean Science and Writing
We have the knowledge and vocabulary to talk with ocean experts, to understand their passions and challenges and ask the right questions; and to create content that resonates with each client’s audience.
Equity Focus
We include diverse voices in our content, including through stories and case studies, quotes and consideration of who participates in the review process, and ensuring these considerations are included throughout the project process (not as an afterthought).
Project Management and Stakeholder Engagement
In close collaboration with clients, we work to keep projects on track, and ensure clients know what to expect and when to expect it. We also manage (and nourish) relationships with all project stakeholders, representing our clients with warmth and professionalism.

AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE
"Working with CarolAnne has been an absolute pleasure. In her time working with RBR, she has been reliable, easy to work with, and has always submitted her work in a timely manner. Her attention to detail is clear in her writing, as she is able to take in-depth interview pieces and turn them into compelling stories of successful instrument deployments, and unique applications. I highly recommend working with her."
— Greg Johnson, President, RBR Ltd.
ENERGETIC OUTLOOK
"CarolAnne knows our audience and she knows the science. She has done a great job of helping produce descriptions of our various research modules for the OFI website. CarolAnne, thanks so much for all your help and energetic outlook (and patience when I was up to my eye balls in alligators)."
— Patti Lewis, Past Communications Manager, Ocean Frontier Institute
EXCITING AND COMPELLING
"Thanks a lot to CarolAnne for producing our exciting and compelling Best Practice Manual for National Decade Committees, in support of the work of these committees within the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The strong engagement from our National Decade Committees really showed that they’re excited about the project and the community approach, and appreciated how CarolAnne reflected their ideas, experiences and challenges in the NDC Manual."
Olivier Dufourneaud, Ocean Decade Community Coordinator, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO)
MY GO-TO FREELANCER FOR OCEAN WRITING
"CarolAnne is my go-to freelancer for ocean writing. She is reliable, easy to communicate with, and creates clear and engaging content. She is constantly working to keep up-to-date about what’s happening in the ocean sciences field and to fine-tune her craft as a science writer. The articles CarolAnne wrote for MEOPAR, taking peer-reviewed research, conducting interviews and creating news articles, helped to highlight to stakeholders the importance of the work of network members."
